Going the Distance

Brandon has just had his first experience with a Pinewood Derby. Though we had the kit for almost three months, the block of wood didn't get cut into a shape resembling a car until last Wed. the 16th at Brandon's cub scout activity at his den leader's house. ('Course, we don't have the right kind of saw, but I must say for the record that if I'd been in charge instead of Peter, I wouldn't have procrastinated NEARLY as much as Peter did!! However, I must admit that I'm very glad that Peter was in charge.) :) Then Brandon and Peter worked on it for a few hours on Saturday...


Here's Brandon sanding the "car" before it got its paint job...Honestly, I don't think he did much besides sand...Oh, he did help pick out the 'detailing' for the car...

Brandon by the track with the finished product, "Firebird", on the big night, Tuesday the 22nd.

Here Brandon's car is racing against the others' in his den. This is one of only 2 heats he didn't win outright. It was the very first heat and he tied in this one for 1st with his friend Daniel.


This is the finals for his den--Brandon's and Daniel's.


Brandon's car is racing against Daniel's again (since it was so close) and now Dallin's (from another den) in one of the final rounds.

......And the results are in! Brandon won the whole Derby!!! (Or should I say Peter won it?!?) :) Not only did he beat out the other boys from his den, he also beat the older boys! Here he is with his framed certificate (which he wants to hang on the wall in his bedroom) and car (which he took, along with all his awards, to school for Show-n-Tell the next day). If you look closely, you can see that he's sportin' a fine brownie mustache (click on the picture for a larger version of the picture)--hee! :)
